This family photoshoot in North West London was as much a treat for me as it was for the big birthday boy ( who got smash and then eat a giant chocolate cupcake for all his hard work – all captured beautifully for his future girlfriends to see no doubt). This was my second shoot with M’s family – the first being this exact time last year for his newborn session. Baby M was not a solo star in either session. Fighting for the spotlight was his canine “sister” Lola whom the camera adored as much as M. So when mum called me to book M’s First Birthday and Cake Smash Photoshoot, I was thrilled!

This time around, like the last this family did not disappoint and I came away from the shoot with plenty of portfolio updating material.

Here is a little glimpse into our session: first birthday cake smash photography london

The family’s spacious and bright home, full of tastefully selected design elements made for a beautiful setting for the shoot. As a rule of thumb ” less is more ” when it comes to portrait photography. I strive to create a backdrop as plain and unobtrusive as possible to avoid drawing focus away from the subjects.  I will often focus on a particular object in the home that will add to the visual effect of the photograph and place is in such as a way as to catch the eye of the viewer but not to detract from the main focal point of the image. In this case, thanks to mum’s creative eye for design I used a strung up garland of Polaroids of little M, held up by tiny clothes pins as beautiful visual element to capture. First Birthday Cake Smash Photography London
